Abstract

The purpose of this study is to define perceptions of people learning Turkish as a foreign language
about Turkey and Turkish. In this qualitative study, semi-structured interview form formed by the
researcher was used as data collection tool. First part of the form, which is formed of two groups, is
about “demographic features” of students while second part is about their “perceptions of Turkey and
Turkish. The research population is constituted by foreign students learning Turkish in Turkish
Teaching Research and Application Center (TÖMER) in Adnan Menderes University in 2017-2018
academic year. Collected qualitative data was analyzed by content analysis method. Similar data was
gathered and commented as part of specific concepts and themes.
As a result of the study, it was determined that people learning Turkish as a foreign language usually
have positive perceptions about Turkey. They also think that Turkey is more prosperous than their
countries. It was determined that their reason for learning Turkish is primarily for being successful in
their undergraduate/graduate education in Turkey and for continuing to live in Turkey after finishing
their education.
