The effect of virtual reality glasses on pain and anxiety during the kidney stone lithotripsy procedure
Abstract
To determine the pain and anxiety levels of patients using virtual reality glasses during the extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy procedure. This was a randomized clinical trial that included 60 lithotripsy participants. The study was conducted out as a single center in the public hospital's ESWL unit. The research group of 60 people was divided into two groups, 30 in the experimental group and 30 in the control group. While the standard stone crushing process was applied to the control group, the experimental group was watched with virtual reality glasses during the procedure. The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and the Numerical Rating Scale, which was used to measure the level of pain and anxiety level. It was determined that the post-procedure STAI scores of the patients in the experimental group (34.13±5.06) were significantly lower than the control group (39.46±4.48) (p<0.05). When the patient's pain experiences during the procedure were evaluated, it was determined that the pain scores of the experimental group (4.40±2.35) were significantly lower than the pain scores of the control group (7.16±1.23) (p<0.05) Virtual reality glasses can be used to control pain and anxiety during the extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy procedure.
