Surgical nursing and ethics
Abstract
Purpose: This review aims to emphasize the importance of ethical principles in surgical nursing practice..Materials and Methods: Relevant databases were searched for original and review articles published in the last 10 years.Findings and Discussion: Surgical nursing, a specialized field within the nursing profession, is a field where vital decisions are frequently made, prompt and careful care is essential, and adherence to ethical principles is of paramount importance. The primary aim of surgical practice is to provide benefit to the patient. Therefore, ethical decision-making in surgery is of critical importance. Adherence to ethical principles in surgical nursing is considered a fundamental responsibility for ensuring patient safety, protecting human dignity, and adopting a fair and conscientious approach to clinical decision-making.Conclusion: Surgical nursing is a high-risk specialty, conducted in collaboration with multiple disciplines, where critical decisions are made under intense stress. Therefore, surgical nurses must consider not only the physical needs of the patient but also their psychological and ethical needs when planning the care process. Protecting patient safety and dignity is a fundamental priority for surgical nursing. Therefore, knowing the ethical principles specific to the nursing profession and acting in accordance with these principles is constitutes an indispensable requirement in surgical nursing practice.
