Primary school student’s perceptions of school

The aim of this study is to examine the perceptions of 4th grade primary school students about the concept of school through verbal and visual metaphors. The study was conducted with a total of 92 students studying in three different public primary schools in the center of Canakkale province in the fall semester of the 2024-2025 academic year. Within the scope of the research, the “School Perception Form” developed by Elmas and Demir (2018) was used. The students were asked to produce metaphors with the pattern “School is like… because…” and then draw a picture reflecting their perceptions of school. The data obtained were analyzed within the framework of case study, one of the qualitative research designs, and themes, categories and codes were created by content analysis method. These codes were classified in the digital environment using Maxqda 2024 software, and the finding were supported with tables and graphs. The finding revealed that many environmental, emotional, social, physical and sensory elements affecting students’ perceptions of school were expressed through metaphors. In particular, the multi-layered data on how the school environment is perceived from the students’ perspective points to the importance of a student-centered perspective in educational policies and school development studies.
