Reconstructing textiles for memory, identity and transgender narratives in contemporary art
Abstract
This article examines the role of textile materials in the representation of identity, the body, and collective memory within contemporary art. Drawing on the theoretical frameworks of Judith Butler, Rozsika Parker, and Bracha L. Ettinger, the study analyzes how techniques such as fabric, thread, and weaving contribute to the formation of artistic narratives that transcend traditional gender roles. The textile practices of both female and male artists are comparatively evaluated, with particular attention to the interdisciplinary and expressive possibilities that textile offers. This study aims to shed light on the transformation of textile from craft to art, providing examples from both Turkey and the international context.
