Coaching skills of teachers and the reflection of the development of these skills on their relationships with students and colleagues
Abstract
Teacher coaching skills have become a crucial factor in strengthening student engagement and fostering peer collaboration in educational processes. Given the limitations of traditional teacher-centered models, it has become increasingly important for teachers to create student-centered learning environments and adopt a guiding role. This study examines the impact of a coaching training program on teachers' relationships with students and colleagues. A pre-test and post-test intervention was implemented to analyze the changes in teachers' coaching skills. The study included nine teachers from different educational levels (three high school, three primary school, and three preschool teachers). The research process involved a four-module training program consisting of interactive sessions, individual and group activities, applied observations, and reflective evaluations. Pre-test results revealed that teachers had limited knowledge of coaching processes, adopted a directive approach in student-teacher relationships, and struggled to establish effective collaboration with their colleagues. Post-test findings indicated that teachers showed an increased adoption of student-centered approaches, greater use of empathy and effective feedback in student-teacher interactions, and improved flexibility in classroom management. Regarding peer coaching, teachers demonstrated a significant increase in awareness of providing and receiving feedback and professional support. Furthermore, it was observed that teachers who received coaching training had higher student participation levels, greater involvement in problem-solving processes, and increased academic motivation. The findings suggest that coaching-based teacher training programs enhance pedagogical competencies, strengthen teacher-student relationships, and improve peer collaboration, contributing to teachers' professional development. In terms of sustainable development in education, it is recommended that coaching-based teacher training programs be expanded.
