Local governance as a mechanism for achieving sustainable local development in Algeria
Abstract
Purpose: This study aims to examine the role of local governance as a modern strategic approach to promoting sustainable local development in Algeria. It focuses on how participatory governance mechanisms and the interaction between economic and social actors can enhance development outcomes, while also addressing corruption as a major obstacle to effective development processes. Method: The study adopts an analytical and conceptual approach based on the examination of governance frameworks and administrative structures. It explores the relationships between institutional actors involved in development projects and evaluates the impact of bureaucratic organization and administrative coordination on achieving sustainable development objectives. Findings: The findings indicate that sustainable local development increasingly depends on participatory approaches that integrate various stakeholders rather than relying solely on traditional local institutions. The study highlights that effective local governance can strengthen coordination among actors, improve transparency, and contribute to reducing corruption. It also shows that the expansion of state functions has increased the importance of administrative systems, leading to organizational variations that influence development performance. Conclusion/Contribution: The study concludes that local governance represents a key mechanism for activating sustainable local development, particularly when supported by participatory practices and efficient administrative structures. It contributes to the field by emphasizing the importance of institutional coordination and governance reform in enhancing development effectiveness and combating corruption within the Algerian context.
